Photographic Society of Japan Awards

Since the Photographic Society of Japan was established in 1952, the society is
annually presenting Photographic Society of Japan Awards on June 1st, the Annual Day of Photography, to people whose achievements in activities related to
photographic culture in Japan was outstanding or who published exceptional
photographic works or essays. Awards are presented in the following five
categories;

International Award

For individuals or groups, inside or outside Japan, who have made distinguished
contributions to Japanese photography.

Distinguished Contributions Award

For individuals or groups with long careers of distinguished contributions to
Japanese photography.

Lifetime Achievement Award

For individuals in Japan who have consistently produced outstanding photographic works over an extended period.

Scholastic Achievement Award

For individuals or groups in Japan who have published outstanding works of
photographic criticism or made other outstanding contributions to photographic
scholarship.

Newcomer's Award

For hopeful new photographers who have produced outstanding photographs (must, in principle, be under 40 years of age).

Award Recipients and Reasons for their Selection
(Titles omitted)
International Prize: no recipient selected.
Distinguished Contributions Award: Tsuguo Tada, for his enormous contribution
to photographic culture through his involvement in the editing of numerous excellent
photographic collections and the planning of photographic exhibitions over many
years, from the 1960s through to the recent “Japan: A Self Portrait”,
both in Japan and overseas.
Distinguished Contributions Award: The late Osam Hiraki, for his enormous
contribution to the enhancement of Japanese photographic culture over 30 years
through such activities as his nurturing of many young photographers
through school education in addition to his activities as a photographic critic in
various media since 1980.
Distinguished Contributions Award: Mayumi Moriyama, for her contribution
to the expansion of the photographic industry and the promotion of
photographic culture over many years, from the establishment of the
New York Japan Camera Center in 1955 until the present.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Yukio Ohyama, for his achievement of
high artistic expression that gives the sense of divine nobility in his photographs
of Japan’s symbol, Mt. Fuji, which has been a consistent subject of his works,
as well as his diligent approach to production.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Keizo Kitajima, for the new photographic
performance displayed by his snapshots in “Keizo Kitajima 1975-1991”,
“ THE JOY OF PORTRAITS”, and other works, as well as by his portraits and
urban landscape series.
Lifetime Achievement Award: Yoshihiro Tatsuki, for his achievement in publishing
novel, high-quality works in various media over many years and the widespread
influence he has exerted on Japanese image culture through these works.
Scholastic Award: Keisho Ishiguro, for his achievements in researching
old photographs, beginning with the epic work
“ Bakumatsu Meiji no Shozo Shashin
(Portraits of the Bakumatsu-Meiji Era) ”for which he brought together portraits
of 146 people who were active during the late Edo and early Meiji eras based
on the collection of his father, Keishichi Ishiguro.
Scholastic Award: Ryuichi Kaneko, for his conscientious and detailed verification and enlightenment activities regarding photographic history, beginning with the
publication of “Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s”in which he introduces
important photobooks from his own enormous collection.
Newcomer’s Award: Keiko Sasaoka, for her ambitious work
“ PARK CITY”that astutely examines Hiroshima today, a city losing
substance as it becomes increasingly a city of parks.
Newcomer’s Award: Aya Fujioka, for the new photographic art possibilities
displayed in her photographic collection “I Don’t Sleep”, which gives a sense
of literariness that cannot be gained from existing frameworks within everyday
scenery and family snapshots.

The 2010 Photographic Society of Japan Awards Ceremony was held on June 1st at the Sasakawa Hall as part of Annual Day of Photography festivities. An exhibition
of Photographic Society of Japan Award-winning works of 2010 was held at the
Fuji Photo Salon Tokyo from May 28th to June 3rd.
